Crested Butte Ski Season 2026-27: Owner Prep Checklist
When Does Crested Butte Mountain Resort Open for 2026-27, and How Should I Prepare My Home?
Vail Resorts announced on August 18, 2026 that Crested Butte Mountain Resort's planned opening date is November 25, subject to change based on weather and conditions. If you own a home here, now is the time to get it ready for winter, and if you are thinking of buying, a winter visit is one of the best things you can do.
Opening dates can change. Check the resort's official channels before you plan travel. This is general information, not a substitute for advice from your builder, plumber, heating professional or property manager.
What is the planned opening date?
According to Vail Resorts' August 18, 2026 announcement of 2026-27 opening dates, Crested Butte Mountain Resort is planned to open November 25, the same date listed for Beaver Creek. The release says opening dates are subject to change based on weather and conditions. That is a plan, not a guarantee, so keep flexibility in your travel.
Why does home prep matter before the first snow?
Because a home that sits empty or under-maintained can have problems that only show up in the cold: frozen pipes, ice dams, a furnace that fails when you need it and snow loads on roofs. A little planning in the fall can prevent expensive repairs. Here is a checklist I share with owners, and you should adapt it with your own professionals.
What should I check inside the home?
- Heating system. Have it serviced by a qualified technician before the first hard freeze, and know where the filters and shutoffs are.
- Plumbing. Ask a plumber how to protect pipes, especially if the home will be vacant, and whether to winterize or keep the heat on at a set temperature.
- Water heater and shutoff valve. Know where the main shutoff is and that it works.
- Smoke and carbon monoxide detectors. Test them and replace batteries.
- Fireplace or wood stove. Have the chimney inspected and cleaned if you use it.
- Propane or fuel. If you use propane, confirm your supplier, delivery schedule and tank level.
What should I check outside?
- Roof and gutters. Clear debris and look for damaged flashing where ice dams form.
- Snow removal. Line up a plow or shoveling service early, since good providers fill their schedules.
- Roof snow shedding. Know where snow slides off the roof, and keep it away from doors, vehicles and propane tanks.
- Driveway and parking. Mark edges so a plow does not damage landscaping.
- Decks and railings. Remove furniture and check for damage.
- Outdoor faucets. Disconnect hoses and shut off exterior water if the system allows.
What if I am away part of the winter?
Many owners here do not live in their homes full-time. If that is you, consider a property manager or a trusted local who can check the home after storms, confirm the heat is on and clear access. Tell your insurance agent how you use the home, since vacancy can affect your policy. See my post on mountain home insurance.
How do I get here in winter?
Gunnison-Crested Butte Regional Airport (GUC) is the closest commercial airport, and flight schedules change from year to year. In my post earlier this month, I summarized the winter schedule as reported on October 7, 2026, including United's planned Denver service starting December 17. Confirm schedules with the airlines. Roads can close or slow in storms, so check conditions at CoTrip.org before driving.
Should I visit before I buy?
I recommend it. A ski-season visit shows you how roads, parking, heating and snow removal work in real life, and it shows you the town when it is busiest. Spend time in the home you are considering during a storm if you can, and ask neighbors how the road performs. Bring questions about heating costs and ask for 12 months of utility bills.
What are market conditions like right now?
Redfin's September 2026 data shows a median sale price of $2,448,834 in the town of Crested Butte and a median of 23 days on market, with only 11 homes sold, so conditions can shift quickly in a small market. See my market update for the full numbers.
What is the bottom line?
Crested Butte Mountain Resort plans to open November 25, weather permitting, and the best time to get your home ready is before the snow arrives. Service the heat, protect the plumbing, arrange snow removal and tell your insurance agent how you use the home. If you are buying, visit in winter before you commit. A local agent can connect you with trusted local professionals.
